Night photography
Last night I went to the coast after sunset to take advantage of the so-called gray nights we currently have. During these gray nights it does not get completely dark, because the sun does not disappear more than 18° below the horizon. This happens every year between May 20 and July 20. So it will remain twilight all night. This is particularly visible when looking north.
Around midnight I saw that there was a real light spectacle if you looked in the direction of Scheveningen. The lighting of the buildings bathed Scheveningen in an orange glow (no pun intended, but appropriate for a seaside resort…). Even the industry on the Maasvlakte contributed.
The moon was also shining brightly and helped to brighten the waves of the sea. The first bright stars were visible and an airplane flying over also made its presence felt in the night sky.
Institutions
For these types of images I naturally use a tripod and normally a cable release. Unfortunately, it was not in the bag this time, but by using the 2-second self-timer (where the mirror is also folded up for even less vibration), I was able to operate the camera vibration-free.
When photographing on the coastline, watch out for your tripod sinking into the wet sand!
I wanted a long shutter speed for the beautiful flow of the sea over the beach. The moon had to undergo light star formation, i.e. get a starburst around it and that is why the aperture is a bit pinched. The ISO is adjusted to combine these settings into a well-exposed image.
