Photo tour Madagascar
A unique 18-day photo tour from October 12 to 29, 2025
Madagascar is rightly known as one of the world’s best destinations for wildlife photography. In recent years, it has become a mecca for nature photographers. The island boasts an unparalleled level of endemism: almost 160 mammals are found exclusively here, including 99 species of lemurs! In addition, Madagascar has around 110 endemic bird species, 260 endemic reptiles, 60 endemic snakes (thankfully not poisonous), 290 endemic amphibians and countless unique insects and plants. What’s more, you’ll find more chameleons here than anywhere else in the world!
Many of these special animals are not only photogenic, but also very approachable, which makes Madagascar a perfect choice for wildlife photography. The island has been separated from the African continent for 160 million years and from India for about 65 million years. This long isolation makes Madagascar a fascinating laboratory of evolution. For those who want to read all about this evolution; the 2296 page thick book “The New Natural History of Madagascar” by Steven M. Goodman is a must!
On this exclusive photo tour we have carefully designed a program that takes you to the most impressive locations in Madagascar. We focus on a wide range of fauna and shine the spotlight on some of the most spectacular endemic species, large and small. Among the highlights are the lemurs, man’s most distant cousins. They range in size from the tiny mouse lemur to the majestic Indri. Our goal is to capture the most special members of this family, along with other unique mammals, birds, chameleons and reptiles.
Our photo tour takes place at the beginning of summer, before the summer rains arrive, and it is during this time that most lemurs give birth to their adorable young!
Madagascar’s landscapes are just as impressive as its unique wildlife. From the strange, spiny forests of the west coast to the tropical rainforests of the eastern mountains, these diverse environments offer a wealth of opportunities for landscape photography on this trip.
Madagascar also has a rich human history. Around 2,000 years ago, the first humans arrived on the island, arriving from Southeast Asia in primitive canoes. Around 1,000 years later, migrants from Africa arrived. Unfortunately, human influence has had a disastrous effect on the fauna and flora of the island. The megafauna, including giant lemurs, elephant birds and giant tortoises, disappeared shortly after the arrival of humans. The remaining lemurs are now limited to less than 10% of the island due to continued deforestation and agricultural activities. Fortunately, much of the incredibly diverse wildlife is protected in reserves, which we will enjoy on this tour.
Why now?
Madagascar is changing rapidly, and it is important to visit this unique island before it is too late. This photo tour offers a unique opportunity not only to capture breathtaking images, but also to contribute to the conservation of nature through conscious tourism.

We return to Andasibe-Mantadia, breaking the long journey with an extra overnight stay. In the afternoon we take a short walk in Andasibe NP to photograph lemurs, amphibians and reptiles.
This stopover offers a final chance to capture the diversity of Andasibe.
Andasibe National Park, also known as Analamazaotra Special Reserve, is one of the most accessible and famous nature parks in Madagascar. The park is located just a few hours drive from the capital Antananarivo and is a hotspot for biodiversity and nature photography.
The park is known for the Indri-indri, the largest species of lemur, with its iconic song that echoes through the rainforest. Andasibe is also home to other special lemurs, such as the bamboo lemur and the woolly lemur. In addition to lemurs, the park is home to numerous species of birds, chameleons, frogs and insects, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.
The landscape of Andasibe is a mix of lush rainforests, with dense vegetation, rivers and picturesque lakes. The forest offers a magical atmosphere, especially in the early morning or after rain, with a veil of mist hanging through the trees.
Andasibe National Park offers an unforgettable experience of Madagascar's unique biodiversity and beauty.
Day 9: October 20, 2025
In the morning we visit the VOIMMA reserve, a beautiful location for close-up photography of lemurs and the forest landscape.
VOIMMA Reserve (Vondron'olona Ifotony Mitia ny Ala, or “Forest-loving Community Group”) is a small-scale community-run nature reserve near Andasibe. It was established as an alternative to commercial reserves and offers visitors an intimate and authentic experience in the Madagascan rainforest.
The reserve is home to an impressive variety of flora and fauna, including the iconic Indri-indri, the largest lemur species, whose melancholic call fills the forest. Other residents include the brown lemur, various colourful chameleons, tree frogs and numerous bird species, such as the Madagascan serpent eagle and the crested ibis. The rich biodiversity makes VOIMMA ideal for macro photography and wildlife watching.
What makes VOIMMA special is the close cooperation with the local community. The income from tourism is used directly for nature conservation and community projects, such as education and reforestation. Visitors not only support nature, but also the people who depend on it. The hiking trails are well maintained and suitable for all ages, making it a perfect location for a relaxing but engaging nature experience.
VOIMMA Reserve offers a unique opportunity to discover Madagascar's biodiversity while contributing to sustainable development and nature conservation.
Later in the day we travel back to Antananarivo.
Day 10: October 21, 2025
We fly to Morondava and end the day with sunset photography at the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs.
The majestic baobab trees provide an unforgettable backdrop at sunset.
Baobabs, known as the “trees of life,” have deep cultural, spiritual and practical significance to the Malagasy people. Madagascar is home to six of the world’s eight known baobab species, including the iconic Adansonia grandidieri, often seen along the famous Avenue of the Baobabs.
For many Malagasy, baobabs are considered sacred trees. They are often associated with ancestral spirits and play an important role in rituals and ceremonies. Some baobabs serve as spiritual places where offerings are made and prayers are said for protection and prosperity.
Baobabs are vital to daily life in Madagascar:
- Water Storage: The trunks of baobabs can store enormous amounts of water, which is crucial during dry seasons.
- Food: The leaves are used in traditional dishes, while the fruits, also called “monkey bread”, are rich in nutrients.
- Medicinal Uses: Various parts of the tree are used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as fever and infections.
- Materials: The bark is used to make ropes, baskets and other everyday items.
In Malagasy culture, the baobab symbolizes resilience, strength and harmony with nature. These trees, which can live for thousands of years, symbolize the perseverance of the population in an often challenging environment.
The baobab is more than a tree; it is an integral part of the life and identity of Madagascar and its inhabitants.
Day 11-12: October 22-23, 2025
Two days to explore Kirindy Forest. In the morning we will photograph the landscapes at sunrise, while during the day we will spot animals such as Verreaux's sifaka and possibly even the fossa. Night walks will give us the chance to photograph nocturnal species in both Kirindy and Akiba.
Kirindy Forest Reserve, located in western Madagascar, is a dry deciduous forest known for its unique flora and fauna. The reserve, located approximately 100 km north of Morondava, is one of the best places on the island to spot wildlife both day and night. Kirindy offers an intimate experience of Madagascar’s biodiversity, with a particular focus on rare and endangered species. Kirindy’s dry deciduous forest has a unique vegetation that has adapted to the seasonal drought. The area is dotted with endemic plants, including baobabs, and is characterized by a striking transition from dry to green after the rains.
Kirindy plays a crucial role in the conservation of Madagascar's biodiversity. The reserve is managed with a focus on sustainable ecotourism and the protection of endangered species, including the fossa and Verreaux's sifaka.
Kirindy Forest Reserve is a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers, thanks to its diverse wildlife, scenic surroundings and unique experience of both day and night walks. It is a place where visitors can experience the wilderness of Madagascar in its purest form.
Day 13: October 24, 2025
We travel back to Morondava. The morning will focus on cultural photography, while the afternoon is ideal for relaxing and photographing the coast and local landscape.
Morondava offers a colorful mix of culture and nature.

A day to explore the mangrove forests and traditional fishing communities around Morondava. We start early to make the most of the morning light.
The mangroves and local communities offer wonderful photographic opportunities.
Day 15: October 26, 2025
We return to Antananarivo, where we conclude the trip with a joint dinner and look back on the highlights of our photography.
The capital is a fitting conclusion to this special journey. Madagascar Airlines has an erratic schedule and therefore, in the event of a cancellation of our flight (it will not be the first time), we have arranged alternative transport by 4×4
Day 16: October 27, 2025
This day is reserved as a backup in case we miss the plane to Antananarivo and have to continue the journey by car. If this is not necessary, we can plan an activity in consultation. Think of an extra photography workshop, a cultural excursion, or time to relax and explore the area further.
Day 17: October 28, 2025
We start the return journey to the Netherlands.

Accommodation & Transport
The hotels/lodges we use during our Madagascar wildlife photography tour are almost all of good quality. The lodge at Kirindy is a bit more basic, but clean and comfortable. Road transport is by small bus or minibus, and the roads vary in quality (although they are usually much improved from the past). There are some fairly long drives.
Walking
The hiking efforts on our Madagascar photography tour are mostly easy, but there are also some moderate hikes through uneven and sometimes steep terrain.
Climate
At lower altitudes in Madagascar it will be warm, dry and sunny. At higher altitudes the weather is similar, but temperatures are moderate to warm. It will be quite humid, especially in the east.
Photo equipment
For wildlife photography of birds and some tree-dwelling lemurs, we recommend a telephoto lens (with or without a converter) with a focal length of 400–600mm on a full-frame DSLR. There will also be wildlife that is approachable within the 100–200mm range, so a 100–400mm zoom lens is ideal for many subjects.
The possibilities for macro photography of reptiles, for example, are particularly good, but due to the limited light in the forests, fill-in flash may be desirable.
In addition to the easily approachable wildlife, which also makes it suitable for wide-angle photography, Madagascar is also rich in panoramic views. A lens in the 16-35mm range is ideal for both types of photography.
You can also achieve excellent results with many subjects using a high-quality digital bridge camera with an optical zoom of 18-20x or more and a wide-angle equivalent of about 24mm.
If you have any questions about what equipment to bring, please feel free to contact us.
